Causes and treatments of heartburn

The causes and treatments of heartburn vary depending on the individual.

It is for this reason that there are so many different herbal remedies, over the counter and prescription medications for indigestion and heartburn relief. Almost everyone gets heartburn and/or indigestion sometimes. They may simply wait on it to go away, try to figure out what food product caused it, so they can avoid that food in the future, or they may take an antacid.

There are many different causes and treatments of heartburn are numerous as well. Antacids or acid reducers typically work quickly and are very effective for indigestion and heartburn relief. Some people are allergic to antacids. Some people feel they have a chalky taste. And some people just don’t like to take anything that they consider unnatural. Herbal remedies for indigestion and heartburn relief typically contain fennel, ginger or mint oil, alone or in combination. The most common over the counter medicines for indigestion and heartburn relief are acid reducers; some contain calcium carbonate or other minerals. Most prescription medications are designed to be taken on a daily basis to prevent chronic heartburn, but some people still need an over the counter product to provide indigestion and heartburn relief on an occasional basis.

It is commonly accepted that highly acidic foods are heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn frequently include efforts to avoid these foods. To clearly define which foods cause heartburn in a specific individual, it may be necessary to keep a food diary for several weeks, noting what foods are followed by heartburn. Changing ones diet may provide indigestion and heartburn relief. If changing ones diet is undesirable, some heartburn herbal remedies and over the counter acid reducers are designed to be taken before a meal that one knows will include these foods. Products in the form of tablets are taken with a glass of water 30 to one hour before eating. Drops that provide indigestion and heartburn relief are also available for those who can not or do not like to take pills.

It is believed that eating large meals is one of the many heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn may include attempting to eat small meals every couple of hours. Indigestion and heartburn symptoms often follow large meals. Thus, avoiding overeating or eating large meals may provide indigestion and heartburn relief. This eating schedule is also recommended for weight loss, because it maintains blood glucose levels and improves metabolism. Overweight people experience heartburn more often than those who are at their ideal weight. Many lifestyle changes that help prevent heartburn also help people lose weight. Losing weight may in the long term provide indigestion and heartburn relief. Fried, spicy and fatty foods are all heartburn causes and heartburn treatments should include efforts to avoid these, reducing not only heartburn frequency, but improving one’s overall health.

Stress, smoking, drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages and even certain types of exercise are all heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn that are effective often include efforts to reduce stress and smoking; drinking more water, less sodas and beer. While moderate regular exercise is helpful, squatting, bending and running can bring on or worsen heartburn. Any exercise, other than a leisurely stroll, that follows a meal, particularly a large one, will often bring on heartburn. For those who enjoy exercise that tends to bring on heartburn, there are heartburn herbal remedies designed to prevent heartburn with continued use. And, prescription medications are designed to prevent heartburn. These medications are not designed to provide the quick relief from heartburn and indigestion that antacids provide.

Efforts to reduce stress, eating in a relaxed environment, chewing slowly may all help prevent heartburn. Anxiety, stress and eating on the run are all heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn brought on by stress or anxiety may include different medications. Only you and your physician can determine if anxiety is a problem for you. When heartburn seems to occur no matter what foods are eaten or beverages are drank, it is sometimes necessary to look at other heartburn causes and treatments for heartburn may be determined by the underlying cause.

It is next to impossible to avoid everything that may cause heartburn all the time, but it is possible to quit smoking, eat smaller meals, get regular exercise and avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages. Anyone who experiences heartburn two or three times per week should have their symptoms evaluated by a physician. A physician can help you look at the possible causes and treatments for heartburn can be planned accordingly.
